Sorry for the inconvenience!       --------------------------------------------------------- Year of the Rat!       Although domestic rats make fantastic pets, they are NOT a no-maintenance pet.  Please review this brief outline from About.com of some rat-related info. If you are still sure a rat is the pet for you, you will find lots of good information on some YahooGroups, and there are many good websites.  Check around for tried-and-true approaches to care, health, and diet by reviewing several websites.  Books and the website by Debbie Ducommon ("The Rat Lady") and online sources really are the best places to get a good start. Because rats are not commonplace as pets, the is some faulty information available, and LCPS highly recommends contacting other rat owners and rat rescues (see below) for proper information.  Neutering and spaying are recommended, just as with other companion pets like cats and dogs, as are regular vet check-ups.  Please ask ahead to find out if your vet treats pet rats.
